The project aims to foster connection and conversation between different communities and the name emphasizes its constant state of evolution.

鈥淚 looked at how creativity is at the heart of peacebuilding and experimented with this concept with five of my string pedagogy students. We started exploring compositions of these concepts and having rehearsals,鈥 said Huang, who is the director of strings and associate professor of violin in the Dewberry School of Music.

Huang earned her master鈥檚 certificate in contemporary dispute resolution from the Carter School of Peace and Conflict Resolution in spring 2023. She was part of the very first cohort, which focused on principles of conflict resolution as they pertain to our domestic front.

鈥淚 started to draw connections between music and the peace building concepts I was learning about in class. Studying conflict resolution inspired me to listen with curiosity, not assumptions, which helps parties appreciate different perspectives and discover solutions,鈥 said Huang.

The group鈥檚 most recent event, Spheres of Engagement was a collaboration between project, Dewberry School director of composition Andrea Reinkemeyer, and the University Libraries鈥 Special Collection Research Center (SCRC), where the students sourced images on which to base their compositions.

鈥淐lassical music tends to be grounded in tradition, so our interpretation of a piece of music is essentially imitation. On this project, we worked with new compositions that had never been performed before,鈥 said Huang.

鈥淭he writing in some of these student compositions was not idiomatic, so the project challenged us to create musical interpretations and explore a wide range of possibilities. The connection between curiosity and creativity was a significant component for both composers and performers in this project,鈥 she said.

Abigail Onstott is a junior composition major and one of the students who presented their original works for written for electronics or a string quartet at the Spheres of Engagement performance in April. Onstott鈥檚 composition was based on soldier-medic Gustav Klemp鈥檚 World War I archive collection.

鈥淕etting to look through all the archives was the coolest thing ever for me because one of the areas I really like to focus on with music is culture, history, and politics, so this project was right up my alley,鈥 said Onstott.

The students learned how to search through the collections as well as how to properly handle the archival materials from Mieko Palazzo, SCRC鈥檚 research services coordinator, and Cindy Badilla-Mel茅ndez, George Mason鈥檚 music and media librarian.

The center also assisted Onstott in translating Klem鈥檚 letters from his native language, German, to English.

鈥淜lemp was also a painter, so a lot of the things in the collection were actually artwork that he had done while he was overseas. As a composer that really fascinated me because it's not easy to work off of a physical artwork, but it's something that definitely helped with inspiration,鈥 said Onstott.

Senior Stellan Hinz took an alternative path in the creative process, composing a fixed media piece using only electronics and human voices. Hinz gravitated toward a collection of letters that were sent to C-SPAN founder Brian Lamb.

鈥淚 wanted to explore compositionally using the human voice as the musical material. I got my roommates and some friends together to record a bunch of these letters and then chopped up the audio in order to bring voice to these letters,鈥 said Hinz, a music composition major.

鈥淵ou could see the progression of how people communicated [from the years 1809, 1978-2012], because there were some handwritten letters, some from a typewriter. It was from a very early stage of the world that we are now living in now where we're all connected and able to communicate all the time,鈥 said Hinz, who plays the saxophone in George Mason鈥檚 Wind Symphony.

Another goal of this collaboration was to teach the students about the business side of composition. Students worked with their individual applied composition instructors to write project proposals, said Reinkemeyer, an associate professor in the Dewberry School.

鈥淲e tried to make the process very similar to applying for a grant,鈥 said Reinkemeyer.

鈥淭he student composers loved working on this project, and I hope we get the work with The Spheres Project again soon,鈥 Reinkemeyer said. 鈥淥ur goal is to have events like this one every semester if we can. Music can interact with every discipline in surprising ways鈥攄ata sonification, astrophysicists, biology. It's a really enriching place for connection.鈥

Answer:

When the Fairfax 海角社区 opened its doors in September 1964, it was the only college in the capital region with buildings that were fully air-conditioned.

Though the temperatures were comfortable inside, some amenities still needed to be added to the campus buildings. Food service was not available at first, but efforts were quickly made to address that. During the first week of classes, vending machines were hastily set up in a study hall. George Mason would later set up a dining hall, the Ordinary, in the South Building (now called Krug Hall). The Ordinary was open until the University Union, now known as Student Union Building I, was built in 1974.

In 2017, the University held a series of events to celebrate the creative genius of Gilbert & Sullivan. With great enthusiasm, the collection was exhibited and appreciated on both the Fairfax and SciTech campuses, and a catalog of the works was also created. Since that time, the collection has not been on view to the public. Now, dozens of items related to The Pirates of Penzance operetta will be on display in the Center for the Arts, presenting a rare opportunity to get up close and personal with the lives and works of this Victorian-era team, considered the forefathers of modern musical theater.

In addition to the exhibit, there will also be pre-performance discussions prior to both performances, featuring Virginia Opera Resident Scholar, Joshua Borths, in Monson Grand Tier on the third level of the Center for the Arts. The discussions will commence 45 minutes prior to the start of the performances, exploring insights about the music and production. A post-performance discussion led by Borths and featuring members of the cast and creative team will also follow the November 13 matinee.

The Gilbert & Sullivan exhibit and The Pirates of Penzance discussions are perfect supplements to Virginia Opera鈥檚 production, allowing audience members to become completely immersed in the world of Gilbert & Sullivan and fully appreciate the performance.

As a part of 海角社区鈥檚 50th Anniversary celebration this year, the University Libraries鈥 Special Collection Research Center (SCRC) is sharing some documents, artifacts, and photography from the archives in its new exhibition 鈥淲e Are Mason: A Student History.鈥

This exhibition, which goes beyond the university鈥檚 first 50 years as an independent university to its origins in 1957, uses images and physical objects to illustrate student life throughout the years, as well as show the development of university traditions, growth of the campus, and milestones in our institution鈥檚 history.

As the title suggests, Mason students, as both witnesses to and actors in the university's history, are the focus of the exhibition, said SCRC archivist Bob Vay, who curated the exhibition. But Vay is quick to point out it was a team effort.

鈥淢y colleagues in SCRC and I conceived the idea for this exhibition last fall. We spent a significant amount of time mulling over different angles and ideas,鈥 said Vay, who is also an alum, with two degrees, a BA and MA in history, from Mason. 鈥淥ur goal with this exhibition was to present more of a grassroots-level interpretation of our history.鈥

鈥淲hile the entire staff of SCRC and our GRA Lillian Poole helped shape and finally put this together, we received a lot of help from other library departments, particularly Preservation Services and the Office of the Dean. Other units outside the Libraries, such as Print Services, Creative Services, and University Branding contributed significantly to the finished product.鈥

The exhibition features manuscript records, university publications, and photographs from three collections in the SCRC holdings:

the Broadside photograph collection, R0135, contains more than 55,000 images captured by Mason students working for the Broadside student newspaper between 1973 and 2001; and

the 海角社区 photograph collection, R0120, contains more than 120,000 images taken by Mason's Office of University Relations from the mid-1950s to 2007.

Located in the SCRC Exhibit Space on the second floor of Fenwick Library, "We Are Mason: A Student History" runs through December 2022. The Libraries will host a reception on Wednesday, May 25, 2022 from 4-6 p.m. adjacent to the exhibition.
