Staff Senate Nominations Now Accepted

Get involved with the university community and have an impact on your workplace by joining the Staff Senate. The senate provides many opportunities to learn more about the university and to collaborate with administrators and staff outside your unit.

Terms begin in August and last for two years. Staff Senate seats are open to classified staff and non-student wage staff. The nomination period for the 2025 election is open through June 20. Nominate yourself or a colleague. Learn more and view the available seats. The election will be held from July 9–23, and new senators will be announced in August.

Test Out PatriotAI

��’s enterprise AI platform, PatriotAI, represents the first major outcome of the university’s strategic partnership with Microsoft and Cloudforce to start a meaningful and thoughtful integration of artificial intelligence capabilities into university operations.

Through a suite of six specialized AI tools, called agents, PatriotAI offers secure, university-managed access to large language models that aid academic work, studies, and student life. Each agent was co-developed with members of the George Mason community, including the AI Visioning Task Force, and they represent our first lineup of AI tools designed to enhance learning, instruction, research, and administration across campus. Mason Career Academy

�� has launched Mason Career Academy, a new online learning resource that is free for current students, faculty, and staff to develop new skills. Mason Career Academy is also available to displaced workers, including federal workers and contractors in the region, for a small registration fee.

Mason Career Academy offers access to more than 90 online micro-credential courses and industry-recognized certifications in fields such as data analytics, cybersecurity, project management, and information technology support. Read more.

Thrift for Free at Patriot Packout’s Free Store

The Patriot Packout's Free Store returns to campus from Monday, June 23, through Saturday, June 28. The store will be open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and from 3–7 p.m. on the Fairfax ��, Art and Design Building, Gillespie Gallery (located on the 1st floor).

All items in the store are free. Explore gently used clothing, shoes, accessories, books, art supplies, small appliances, electronics, household items, and kitchen goods. Partners and family members are invited to thrift with their Patriot.

Registration is required. All items were donated by the university community during Patriot Packout, a campus move-out initiative that reduces waste and addresses basic needs insecurity.

Wellness and Safety Training at Mason Square and SciTech

Facilities and �� Operations invites faculty and staff from all units to participate in upcoming wellness and safety sessions at Mason Square and the Science and Technology ��. Designed to support health, safety, and overall well-being, these quick and informative sessions include CPR/AED training, emergency response (“Stop the Bleed”), ergonomic and spine health tips, and personalized wellness checks. Whether you are looking to recharge, get back on track, or simply stay proactive about your health, there’s something here for everyone. Get more details and register.

One Year Later: Continuing the Momentum from the Faculty and Staff Experience Survey

It’s been one year since the Faculty and Staff Experience Survey, and many units have shared results and created action plans to improve the workplace. If your team hasn’t reviewed its results yet, now is a great time—Human Resources facilitators are available to support the process.

Even without direct report data, teams can still reflect on the Q12 questions. Gallup offers a helpful resource, “Engagement Planning Options for Managers Without Q12® Results,” available through the Gallup platform.

Survey data and planning resources are available on the Faculty and Staff Engagement Survey website (VPN or on-campus network access required). For support or to schedule a session, contact engagehr@gmu.edu.

Employee Resource Group for Hybrid/Remote Employees

Mason Throughout the Nation (MTN) is dedicated to fostering a vibrant and inclusive community for remote and hybrid faculty and staff across ��. Through sharing work-life balance practices, professional development opportunities, and social events, the group aims to ensure that no matter where its members are located, they feel connected and supported at George Mason.

The U.S. Navy Band Commodores, the Navy's premier jazz ensemble, have been performing the very best of big band jazz for the Navy and the nation for 50 years. Formed in 1969, this 18-member group continues the jazz big band legacy with some of the finest musicians in the world. The Commodores' mission includes public concerts, national concert tours, ceremonial support in honoring our veterans, jazz education classes and clinics, and protocol performances for military and civilian government officials. The College of Humanities and Social Sciences and Department of Communication at �� is pleased to announce the appointment of John Kotcher as the interim director of the Center for Climate Change Communication. Kotcher succeeds Edward Maibach, the center’s founding director and Distinguished University Professor Emeritus, who is retiring after 18 years of leadership.

Kotcher, who earned a PhD in communication from George Mason in 2016, has played a central role in the center’s research and impact for more than a decade. He currently serves as a research associate professor at the center, where he leads a dynamic team of faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students dedicated to advancing public engagement and climate change communication.

Kotcher is a nationally recognized scholar and a co-principal investigator of the influential Climate Change in the American Mind project, a collaboration with the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication that tracks U.S. public opinion on climate change and climate policy.

Over the course of his career, he has served as principal investigator or co-investigator on more than $1.2 million in research funding and has written more than 50 peer-reviewed publications. His work has appeared in leading journals including The Lancet Planetary Health, Nature Climate Change, and The BMJ, and has been featured in major news outlets such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Atlantic.

“I’m honored to step into this role and continue the center’s important mission at such a critical time,” said Kotcher. “Dr. Maibach has shaped the field of climate communication, and I’m grateful for his mentorship and the opportunity to support our team’s ongoing work to inform and empower the public and conduct action-oriented research.”

Maibach is widely considered one of the most influential figures in the field of climate communication. During his tenure, he co-founded major national initiatives including the Climate Change in the American Mind project, the Medical Society Consortium on Climate and Health, and the Climate Matters program supporting broadcast meteorologists as local climate educators. In 2021, news agency Thompson Reuters identified him as one of the world’s 10 most influential scientists working on climate change.

“John brings a deep understanding of the science of climate communication that drives our work,” said Maibach. “He’s a thoughtful leader and a brilliant scholar. I’m so pleased that our center will be moving forward under his guidance.”

"The Center for Climate Change Communication has helped create an entirely new field of study and has served the nation in important ways since its creation in 2007," said Ann Ardis, dean of the College of Humanities and Social Science. "We are extremely proud of its work and delighted that its new director is a Mason alum."

High School Graduation Ceremonies at EagleBank Arena

Heavy traffic is expected on and around ��’s Fairfax �� for regional high school graduation ceremonies at EagleBank Arena through June 16. EagleBank Arena will host up to three ceremonies each day, so traffic may be entering and exiting campus from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m. Please allow extra travel time on and around campus. George Mason faculty, staff, and students are advised to use the general permit area of the Rappahannock Parking Deck or the Field House parking lots to avoid delays. Shenandoah Parking Deck (levels 4 and 5) will be open for limited overflow student, employee, and event parking on weekdays when graduations occur.

Math Enrichment Camps for Grades 6–9

Mason Math Odyssey is a camp for rising 6–9 graders who are curious about math and would like to learn about mathematics concepts typically not taught in K-12 curriculum. Campers will build mathematical maturity while honing problem solving, collaboration, and communication skills. Camps will be hosted from July 7–11 and July 21–25 on the Fairfax ��. Conference rooms are now available for self-reservation in Fuse at Mason Square. These spaces are shared among tenants at Mason Square, reserved through the Fuse app, and intended to support meetings, collaborative work, and group discussions. Reservation times should accurately reflect activity needs (do not reserve a space for a fully day, if it is only needed for a few hours).

Additionally, George Mason conference rooms, team rooms, and hoteling offices are available for faculty and staff to reserve through the Fuse app. These rooms can be reserved Monday– Friday between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. See the full list of self-reservable team rooms and hoteling spaces. Supervisor Boot Camp: Summer and Fall Cohorts

Register now for the upcoming Supervisor Boot Camp beginning Tuesday, June 24. This program is designed to provide essential information in a supportive cohort environment, with opportunities for participants to reflect, engage with and learn from one another, and network.

Summer Movement Challenge: Virginia Tech’s Hokie Wellness Team Challenges George Mason to a Step-Off

Virginia Tech’s Hokie Wellness team is partnering with George Mason’s Faculty and Staff Engagement team to offer a virtual movement challenge exploring 58 miles along the Appalachian Trail. The goal is to walk one mile or move 15 minutes per day while learning about the Appalachian Trail and receiving weekly tips on mental well-being. The challenge will run from Monday, June 9, through Friday, August 15.

The MIX: Summer Workshops

The Mason Innovation Exchange (The MIX), located in Horizon Hall on the Fairfax ��, is a hub for innovation, exploration, and creativity at George Mason. Services are open to students, faculty, and staff. The MIX includes a Makerspace, providing tools for making, from sewing machines to welding and 3D printing; a Media Lab that provides a green screen, studio lighting, VR headsets and a podcast booth; and an Incubator, providing entrepreneurship training and support. Carolyn Drews-Botsch, professor in the Department of Global and Community Health at the College of Public Health at ��, has been honored by the Society for Epidemiologic Research with the Kenneth Rothman Career Accomplishment Award. This award acknowledges Drews-Botsch's profound impact on the field has shifted the way scholars and scientists practice epidemiology.

Drews-Botsch specializes in pediatric epidemiology, and the factors, particularly in the perinatal period, that contribute to the causation of certain diseases. She is an expert on occlusion therapy (eye patching) in children with unilateral congenital cataract and amblyopia, commonly known as “lazy eye,” in children.

“I am humbled to think that both my research and my mentorship of junior scholars has had a lasting impact on the field and on people’s health. Past winners include people who have made significant contributions to the field of epidemiology over the years, and I am honored to join their ranks,” said Drews-Botsch

Over her time as an academic, Drews-Botsch has received the National Research Service Award in Cancer Epidemiology from the National Institutes of Health, has been elected to the American Academic of Epidemiology, and, most recently, received a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award to teach and research amblyopia in Ireland. She has published over 175 peer-reviewed studies on topics related to pediatric disease causation.

The Society for Epidemiologic Research was established in 1968 to foster epidemiologic research. It is the oldest and largest general epidemiology society in North America.

Since 2007, Joy Sobieralski has been an essential part of �� as the financial reporting manager. Before her transition to Fiscal Services, she worked as a senior internal auditor in the Internal Audit Office. For her expertise and dedication, she is recognized as the June Employee of the Month.

Nusrat Sultana, director of financial reporting in Fiscal Services, emphasized the importance of Sobieralski’s work, saying, “she has played a pivotal role in launching several critical initiatives in the department and has consistently contributed innovative solutions. She ensures that we are careful stewards of university resources."

Amid significant changes in accounting regulations and the accounting department over the past few years, Teresa Klock-Taube, associate vice president and controller in Fiscal Services, and Claire Wurmfeld, associate controller, have found Sobieralski 's expertise and consistent dedication to be a testament to her resilience and unwavering commitment to George Mason's success.

“Joy's expertise in navigating increasingly complex accounting standards and implementing new regulations with precision has firmly established her as a trusted leader,” Klock-Taube said.

“Joy is an asset to the unit and the university,” said Wurmfeld.

Colleagues also said they value Sobieralski 's willingness to go above and beyond to meet deadlines and to ensure that the university's accounting records and financial statements are accurate and complete.”

“Joy’s deep understanding of the university's and [��] Foundation's complex financial data and rating agency ratios has been invaluable in ensuring successful communication of its financial situation to the rating agencies,” said Monica Michaud, now-retired director of Finance and Debt Management. “Her technical proficiency makes her an indispensable member of the team, and her work continues to have a significant, positive impact on the university’s and foundation's ratings.”

How did you come to Mason:

I grew up in Reston and always knew about George Mason, but it was after my husband started at the university and spoke so positively about the environment that I decided to explore opportunities here.

Best day on the job:

I look forward to the financial statement submission date each year because it is a culmination of a huge team effort and meeting the deadline provides a great sense of accomplishment.

What do you like best about working at Mason:

Definitely the people. Being surrounded by supportive, driven, and talented colleagues makes every day enjoyable and rewarding. Their collaboration, encouragement, and shared sense of purpose creates an environment where I feel valued and motivated to contribute my best work.

What do you like to do when you’re not working:

My son plays baseball, so my husband and I spend a lot of time at the baseball field. He graduates from high school this year and will play in college, so we are looking forward to visiting new places and watching him compete. I also enjoy reading and spending time with our French bulldog, Cooper. If you’ve been on a call with me, you’ve probably heard him snoring in the background.

Two members of George Mason's academic advising community were honored with regional awards from the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) this spring. These awards recognize excellence in academic advising in NACADA Region 2, which includes Delaware, Washington, D.C., Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.

Joshua Fletcher, undergraduate academic advisor in the Computer Science Department, was honored with the award for Excellence in Advising—Primary Role Advisor.

Barbara Snyder, director of student success and academic advising in the Costello College of Business, received the award for Excellence in Advising—Advising Administrator.

Fletcher and Snyder were formally recognized at the NACADA Region 1 and 2 conference in April in Buffalo, New York.

Academic advisors serve as vital resources as students navigate their academic journeys at George Mason. Delivering a distinctive and inclusive student experience is one of the university’s strategic priorities, and student advising is a critical part of the student services infrastructure.

Fletcher started working at George Mason in 2019, after previously working as a school counselor at a Title I middle school in Pinellas Park, Florida. He earned a master’s degree in counseling education from the University of Florida. We asked him to share some insights into his experiences advising students at George Mason and what it means to be recognized for his work.

What are your main responsibilities in your role? What types of students do you advise?

I advise approximately 2,600 undergraduate computer science and applied computer science students at all stages of their education journey. Academic advising has given me the opportunity to understand and evaluate students in difficult situations, develop a plan of action by utilizing the degree audit system, and take the lead in group advising sessions.

I also process important documents such as substitutions, waivers, major declarations, re-enrollments, appeals, and many others. In addition, I help with several events throughout the year such as College of Engineering and Computing Visit Days, Fall/Spring Previews, orientations, Spotlight Days, and more.

What do you like best about your job?

I take an approach to meet students where they are. My philosophy on advising is to understand where the student is, but be real about the interworking of their major.

I have a dialogue with my students about their passion, hobbies, and goals. I use this information to help them build a support system for their career goals and encourage them to create alternative paths that will lead them to be successful in the future.

What are some of the biggest challenges in your role?

One of the challenges that advisors face is the caseload numbers. We see a lot of students every day, and it is not surprising that our appointments are booked.

Have you previously attended the NACADA conference? What do you enjoy most about the conference and the organization?

Last year, one of my colleagues and I attended the Regional 2 conference in New Jersey. One of the breakout sessions was called “How to Publish for NACADA,” and we discovered the opportunity to write for NACADA. Because we have so many personal experiences as advisors, we thought it would be a great idea to share some of our stories with other advisors.

To our surprise, our article was published in the September 2024 edition of Academic Advising Today. This is my first published article. Our article, “Academic Advisors' Mental Health Literacy and Experiences Working with Students Facing Emotional and Mental Health Issues,” encourages other advisors to gather information from research and colleagues to become more informed about how to effectively work with students who struggle with mental and emotional health issues.

What memorable moments stand out to you in your academic advising experiences?

The Degree Celebration for the College of Engineering and Computing. The Computer Science advising team always helps out with the event. One year, several of our students came up to us and thanked us for helping them through their journey at George Mason.

Graduation is a time of celebrating the students’ success, but it also felt good to hear that we are appreciated by our students.

High School Graduation Ceremonies at EagleBank Arena

Open Enrollment Is Underway: Drop-in Information Sessions

It’s time to make important choices about your benefits for the upcoming year. Open Enrollment started Friday, May 16, and ends Friday, May 30. This is your annual opportunity to:

Fuse Drop-in Offices at Mason Square

Additionally, George Mason conference rooms, team rooms, and hoteling offices are expected to become available for faculty and staff to reserve through the Fuse app around May 30. These rooms can be reserved Monday– Friday between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.

The MIX: Summer Workshops

The �� Athletics Department mourns the loss of long-time men's basketball administrator Carolyn Marsh, who passed away on Thursday, May 15.

The “matriarch” of the George Mason men's basketball program, and one of the foundational titans of George Mason's rise to national prominence, Marsh proudly served the department for 46 years. She primarily worked as the executive assistant for the program and its head coaches.

"Carolyn Marsh was the godmother of George Mason basketball,” said men’s basketball head coach Tony Skinn, who was a guard on the team from 2003-06. “She was truly one of the sweetest and kindest souls I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. I can still picture her smile lighting up the office. While her absence leaves a space that can never be filled, I know Mason now has a special angel watching over us."

Alongside her husband, Jay, who served as an administrator in the department for 45 years, Marsh left an indelible mark on hundreds of George Mason student-athletes over her decades of service.

"The players," Marsh said, when asked what gave her the most satisfaction from the job when she retired in 2021. "I just feel like I'm a mom."

That feeling was mutual as players, such as guard Ricky Wilson (1982-86), noted.

"Carolyn Marsh was 'my mom away from mom.' I would have never graduated from George Mason in four years without her,” Wilson said. “She advised me, guided me, nurtured me, and loved me. I was not alone. There are countless former Mason basketball players who would tell you the same.”

Marsh began working for George Mason Athletics in 1975 as a sports information assistant, before assuming her role as executive assistant soon after.

"Carolyn Marsh was simply wonderful. She touched so many lives with her amazing personality. Although she worked for me for 14 years, she was the one who was always in charge,” said Jim Larrañaga, men’s basketball head coach from 1997-2011. “I valued her opinions and welcomed her advice."

In addition to the Marshes' years of service to George Mason, “the first couple of George Mason Athletics,” as they’re often referred to, also provided significant support to the department through the Patriot Club.

In addition to funding an endowed scholarship in their name, the Marshes provided a signature gift of $50,000 to renovate the George Mason men's and women's basketball locker rooms. The gift also funded the creation of the men's basketball film room, known as the Carolyn Marsh Film Room.

"Carolyn was one of the most wonderful people I have ever met in my life,” said Rick Barnes, who served as men’s basketball assistant coach (1980-85) and then head coach (1987-88). “She had an incredible spirit and made everyone who came in contact with her a better person.”

Tom O'Connor, who served as athletic director at George Mason from 1994 to 2014, agreed. “Anyone who had the great pleasure to have met Carolyn at Mason or anywhere knew that she was special. She was quiet, loving, and loyal. The coaches and student athletes and I always felt at ease knowing she would help them in any way she could. All of us who knew her will never forget her kindness.”

Lamar Butler, former guard (2001-02, 2003-06) and director of player development since 2023, also remembered Carolyn’s kindness to players. “After I graduated, she would always call to check in and see how I was doing. She loved seeing pictures of my daughters. Her big smile and warm spirit will be greatly missed.”

"Mrs. Marsh was a wonderful person who I always enjoyed spending time with,” said Otis Livingston II, guard from 2015-19. “We had many conversations about basketball and life. She always put a smile on my face, and I considered her a friend. She encouraged me to strive for greatness both on and off the court. I want to offer my deepest condolences to Jay Marsh. I saw firsthand the connection, love, and relationship they had.”

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 22, at noon at Woodward Funeral Home, 200 Fredericksburg Ave., Louisa, Virginia. A reception will be held from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at Callie Opie’s Orchard, 4533 Zachary Taylor Highway, in Mineral, Virginia.

Burial will be private.

In honor of Carolyn's passion and pride for Patriot basketball, the family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to George Mason Basketball. Donations can be made online.
