High School Graduation Ceremonies at EagleBank Arena

Heavy traffic is expected on and around ��’s Fairfax �� for regional high school graduation ceremonies at EagleBank Arena through June 16. EagleBank Arena will host up to three ceremonies each day, so traffic may be entering and exiting campus from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m. Please allow extra travel time on and around campus. George Mason faculty, staff, and students are advised to use the general permit area of the Rappahannock Parking Deck or the Field House parking lots to avoid delays. Shenandoah Parking Deck (levels 4 and 5) will be open for limited overflow student, employee, and event parking on weekdays when graduations occur.

Through a suite of six specialized AI tools, called agents, PatriotAI offers secure, university-managed access to large language models that aid academic work, studies and student life. Each agent was co-developed with members of the George Mason community, including the AI Visioning Taskforce, and they represent our first lineup of AI tools designed to enhance learning, instruction, research, and administration across campus. �� has launched Mason Career Academy, a new online learning resource that is free for current students, faculty, and staff to develop new skills, and is available to displaced workers, including federal workers and contractors in the region, for a small registration fee.

Crucial Conversations Workshop: Mastering Dialogue

Whenever you’re not getting the results you want, it’s likely an important conversation either hasn’t happened or hasn’t been handled well. At the heart of healthy and high-performance organizations are people willing and able to hold Crucial Conversations.

Join Human Resources for a two-day session June 23– 24 from 9 a.m. to noon on the Fairfax ��, Merten Hall, to learn the skills to turn disagreement into dialogue for improved relationships and results. "Crucial Conversations for Mastering Dialogue" is an engaging classroom course rich with group discussion, real-time practice, and group support and coaching. Register. Math Enrichment Camps for Grades 6–9

Mason Math Odyssey is a camp for rising 6–9 graders who are curious about math and would like to learn about mathematics concepts typically not taught in K-12 curriculum. Campers will build mathematical maturity while honing problem solving, collaboration, and communication skills. Camps will be hosted from July 7–11 and July 21–25 on the Fairfax ��. Fuse Drop-in Offices at Mason Square

Conference rooms are now available for self-reservation in Fuse at Mason Square. These spaces are shared among tenants at Mason Square, reserved through the Fuse app, and intended to support meetings, collaborative work, and group discussions. Reservation times should accurately reflect activity needs (do not reserve a space for a fully day, if it is only needed for a few hours).

Additionally, George Mason conference rooms, team rooms, and hoteling offices are available for faculty and staff to reserve through the Fuse app. These rooms can be reserved Monday– Friday between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. See the full list of self-reservable team rooms and hoteling spaces. Crucial Conversations Workshop: Mastering Dialogue

Supervisor Boot Camp: Summer and Fall Cohorts

Register now for the upcoming Supervisor Boot Camp beginning Tuesday, June 24. This program is designed to provide essential information in a supportive cohort environment, with opportunities for participants to reflect, engage with and learn from one another, and network.

This cohort is presented in person, over three days from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Registration is also open for fall cohort. For more information, visit the Supervisor Boot Camp website. Participants must supervise at least one employee. For questions, contact hrlearn@gmu.edu.

Summer Movement Challenge: Virginia Tech’s Hokie Wellness Team Challenges George Mason to a Step-Off

Virginia Tech’s Hokie Wellness team is partnering with George Mason’s Faculty and Staff Engagement team to offer a virtual movement challenge exploring 58 miles along the Appalachian Trail. The goal is to walk one mile or move 15 minutes per day while learning about the Appalachian Trail and receiving weekly tips on mental well-being. The challenge will run from Monday, June 9, through Friday, August 15.

Complete each week's check-in and be entered into a raffle for George Mason Flair. Register by June 4. Email engagehr@gmu.edu with questions.

The MIX: Summer Workshops

The Mason Innovation Exchange (The MIX), located in Horizon Hall on the Fairfax ��, is a hub for innovation, exploration, and creativity at George Mason. Services are open to students, faculty, and staff. The MIX includes a Makerspace, providing tools for making, from sewing machines to welding and 3D printing; a Media Lab that provides a green screen, studio lighting, VR headsets and a podcast booth; and an Incubator, providing entrepreneurship training and support. It’s time to make important choices about your benefits for the upcoming year. Open Enrollment started Friday, May 16, and ends Friday, May 30. This is your annual opportunity to:

Review and update your health insurance
Add or remove dependents
Choose new benefits or make changes to existing ones
Take advantage of flexible spending accounts Health FSA and Dependent FSA

Drop-in information sessions are hosted from May 19–30 across multiple campuses and virtually. Counterterrorism Summit

��, in partnership with the Government Technology and Services Coalition’s (GTSC) publication Homeland Security Today, will host the inaugural “Counterterrorism 2025: Terrorism Trends, Tactics, and Targets” summit on Tuesday, June 3, at Van Metre Hall at Mason Square in Arlington, Virginia. This full-day event will explore the shifting dynamics of global terrorism and the strategies being developed to confront emerging threats. Professional Clothing Closet: Donations Needed

The Professional Clothing Closet allows students in the College of Education and Human Development to rent clothes to wear to their internships or job interviews. The EDSE Council, a Special Education Program student organization, opened the closet due thanks to donations from the George Mason community. Read more about the program. Items are needed to help support the operations of the clothing closet. The following items are needed:

Clothes hangers
Shoe organizers
Clothing racks
Plastic storage bins for clothing
Full-length mirror

Donation items can be placed in the donation bin on the Fairfax �� in the Finley Building outside Room 116B. If a donation is large, like a plastic bin, place it by the donation bin with a "donation" label on the item.

Pathways to Practice: A Community of Practice for Professionals in the Field of Professional Development

Faculty and staff are invited to join Pathways to Practice, a new community of practice for professional development professionals at George Mason. This new group is dedicated to elevating professional development practitioners in their roles as facilitators, coaches, and trainers. Pathways to Practice will convene monthly to explore best practices, emerging technologies and innovations in the field, while also serving as a space for members to act as thought partners—sharing ideas, strategies, and approaches to enhance practice and promote professional development across the university. Reminders: Canvas Training and Blackboard Storage

Canvas Training
Starting in summer 2025, all courses will use Canvas as the university’s official learning management system (LMS). Instructors who have not yet participated in Canvas training, or have not begun this transition, should visit the "Are You Canvas Ready?" website for valuable information, resources, and checklists.

Blackboard Storage
Before July 15, users are strongly encouraged to download and save any materials from Blackboard that they may want or need to keep. Once Blackboard access ends, these materials will no longer be available. You will not have access to these courses in Canvas. If you have any questions or need assistance downloading your materials, visit lms.gmu.edu or contact the project team at lms@gmu.edu.

Great 18th-Century British Baking Challenge

On your marks, get set, bake! University Libraries is hosting a very old-fashioned baking challenge, and the recipes come from the Fairfax-Spencer Family Recipe Book held in George Mason’s Special Collections Research Center.

The event will happen on Wednesday, May 21, from 3–5 p.m. on the Fairfax ��, Fenwick Library. Try your hand at one of the featured recipes, and bring the results to share—or simply come to taste-test and judge. Register to attend.

George Mason Commencement and Degree Celebrations are coming soon. Spring Commencement will take place on Thursday, May 15, at 9:30 a.m. in EagleBank Arena. Patriot Packout Happening through May 14

Patriot Packout is an opportunity to donate like-new and gently used items at the Fairfax ��, Science and Technology ��, and the Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation. During residential move-out, Patriot Packout diverts items from the waste stream and makes them available to those who can use them. Learn about accepted donation items, campus drop-off locations, and volunteer opportunities.

Students, faculty, staff, and community members are welcome to donate items. Donations are redistributed to George Mason Patriots, on-campus resources, and local community organizations, preventing useful items from ending up in the trash. Patriot Packout’s donations this spring will support the Patriot Pantry, Trans Clothing Closet, Art Supply Sharing Cabinet, First Gen+ Center, The MIX, Parking and Transportation's bike programs, and Food for Others, and more.

Build an Artificial Reef for the Chesapeake Bay

Roll up your sleeves—it’s reef-building time! Dive into the process of helping create artificial reef structures that will be deployed in the Chesapeake Bay. Participants will help build molds, mix cement, and pour the mix into forms that will shape tomorrow’s marine habitats. This event will be hosted on Monday, May 12, from noon to 2 p.m. on the Science and Technology ��, Bull Run Parking Lot. RSVP on Mason 360.

During the event, hear from Jesse Howe, George Mason alum and assistant director of Coastal Conservation Association Maryland, who will share how artificial reefs support oyster population restoration, biodiversity, and help restore the bay's ecosystem. Seed Library at Fenwick

The new Seed Library is located on a cart on the first floor of Fenwick Library on the Fairfax ��. The library includes books and online resources that can help you learn to garden. Seed libraries have grown in popularity around the country, found in public libraries, community centers, community gardens, makerspaces, and university libraries. A seed library is stocked with seeds, which patrons take, grow, and then, if possible, return seeds to the library. The emphasis, however, is on the taking and growing of seeds, and less on the drying and returning of seeds. Seed libraries promote growing your own food, well-being, community, and learning in a hands-on way.

�� Notice: Mason Day Is Friday, April 25

�� will celebrate Mason Day on Friday, April 25, from 3–10 p.m. on the Fairfax ��. The event will feature a carnival with rides, games, treats, food trucks, inflatables, novelties, and performances. Admission is free for students, faculty, and staff with a valid George Mason ID. Guest tickets are available at the EagleBank Arena box office.

The event will take place from 3–10 p.m. in Parking Lots L and A near EagleBank Arena. Plan your trip with shopMason’s guide to Mason Day.

Parking and Traffic Advisory
Expect increased traffic on and around the Fairfax ��. Lot L will be closed from Sunday, April 20, at 11 p.m. through Sunday, April 27. The western side of Lot A will be closed starting on Tuesday, April 22, at 1 p.m., and will reopen Sunday, April 27. Po River Lane between Roanoke River Road and Lot A will be closed on Friday, April 25.

Signage has been posted in affected areas. Any vehicles left in Lot L after 11 p.m. on Sunday, April 20, will be relocated at the owner’s risk and expense. If you have purchased a daily, weekly, or monthly Lot L and K permit, please park in Lot K during this time. Get more details from Parking and Transportation.

Spheres of Engagement is an innovative and collaborative performance project between the Reva and Sid Dewberry Family School of Music and the University Libraries Special Collections Research Center. The Spheres Project, a collaborative music ensemble, will perform new student compositions inspired by the Special Collections Research Center. Spheres of Engagement is coordinated by June Huang, director of the Spheres Project; Cindy Badilla-Meléndez, music and media librarian; and Andrea Reinkemeyer, director of composition. Held in conjunction with the opening of the Seed Library at Fenwick, Cross-Pollination explores the relationship between the earth’s natural elements and the creative process, featuring works by George Mason faculty. This exhibition draws on both the literal and metaphorical meanings of cross-pollination, emphasizing the continuous exchange between the organic world and artistic creation.

This exhibition grew out of the “IndigenoUs Northern Virginia: Activating Local and Diasporic Native Identities at Mason” project of Alison Landsberg and Gabrielle Tayac. “Indigenous Northern Virginia” began with a Summer Research Institute of students who connected with diverse indigenous communities in Northern Virginia through experiential listening and dialogue. Peace Week

In today’s global landscape, persistent conflicts, the escalating impacts of climate change, and the rise of artificial intelligence are significantly posing new dynamics for the stability of our global society. These challenges necessitate a fundamental rethinking of the concept of peace and how it can be achieved and sustained.

April Is Earth Month

Mason Empty Bowls

Empty Bowls is a grassroots movement by artists in cities around the world to raise money for food-related charities that feed the hungry in their communities. All funds raised through George Mason Empty Bowls will be donated to the Student Food and Housing Insecurity Fund, which serves George Mason students experiencing food insecurity.

Mason Empty Bowls will be hosted on Wednesday, April 30, from 6–9 p.m. at the Center for the Arts on the Fairfax ��. The event includes dinner, dessert, and sounds of Green and Gold Soul. Guests will choose a handmade bowl to take home as a reminder of the students in our community who struggle with food insecurity. For more information and purchase tickets, visit the website.

Featuring Mason’s talented vocal students in collaboration with an instrumental chamber ensemble, these live, in-person performances will showcase great vocal skill and dramatic ability. Follow American writer Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas as they weather two wars in their famed Paris home at 27 Rue de Fleurus. As the paintings sing, meet Picasso, Matisse, Hemingway, Fitzgerald, and other great artists and writers who Stein hosted and mentored.

Trapped together in a sweltering jury room, the tensions rise along with the heat as 12 ordinary people must decide the guilt or innocence of a young person accused of murder. What begins as a seemingly simple decision becomes more complex as ingrained ideas, systemic racism, and diverging perspectives collide. A thoughtful and poignant look at the consequences of our actions (or lack thereof), this show asks how you determine the truth when faced with a life-or-death decision.
