Open Enrollment Is Underway: Drop-in Information Sessions

It’s time to make important choices about your benefits for the upcoming year. Open Enrollment started Friday, May 16, and ends Friday, May 30. This is your annual opportunity to:

West �� Development Town Hall

�� is hosting a town hall meeting continuing the conversation regarding the development of the western portion of the Fairfax ��.

The summer schedule for Mason Shuttles went into effect on Monday, May 19. Check the schedule for specific routes. There will be no shuttle service on the following holidays:

Professional Clothing Closet: Donations Needed

The Professional Clothing Closet allows students in the College of Education and Human Development to rent clothes to wear to their internships or job interviews. The EDSE Council, a Special Education Program student organization, opened the closet due thanks to donations from the George Mason community. Read more about the program. Items are needed to help support the operations of the clothing closet. The following items are needed:

Clothes hangers
Shoe organizers
Clothing racks
Plastic storage bins for clothing
Full-length mirror

Donation items can be placed in the donation bin on the Fairfax �� in the Finley Building outside Room 116B. If a donation is large, like a plastic bin, place it by the donation bin with a "donation" label on the item.

Pathways to Practice: A Community of Practice for Professionals in the Field of Professional Development

Faculty and staff are invited to join Pathways to Practice, a new community of practice for professional development professionals at George Mason. This new group is dedicated to elevating professional development practitioners in their roles as facilitators, coaches, and trainers. Pathways to Practice will convene monthly to explore best practices, emerging technologies and innovations in the field, while also serving as a space for members to act as thought partners—sharing ideas, strategies, and approaches to enhance practice and promote professional development across the university. Reminders: Canvas Training and Blackboard Storage

Canvas Training
Starting in summer 2025, all courses will use Canvas as the university’s official learning management system (LMS). Instructors who have not yet participated in Canvas training, or have not begun this transition, should visit the "Are You Canvas Ready?" website for valuable information, resources, and checklists.

Blackboard Storage
Before July 15, users are strongly encouraged to download and save any materials from Blackboard that they may want or need to keep. Once Blackboard access ends, these materials will no longer be available. You will not have access to these courses in Canvas. If you have any questions or need assistance downloading your materials, visit lms.gmu.edu or contact the project team at lms@gmu.edu.

The University Life Student Success Symposium is a chance to connect with colleagues, learn about innovative practices to support your work, and explore strategies to foster student engagement. George Mason faculty and staff are eligible to apply for the $250 scholarship to cover books, software, and supplies for George Mason courses. Eligibility requirements include:

Enrolled in a George Mason degree or graduate certificate program
Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
At least one year of service at George Mason
“Successful,” “High-Performing,” or “Outstanding” rating in the most recent performance evaluation

Great 18th-Century British Baking Challenge

On your marks, get set, bake! University Libraries is hosting a very old-fashioned baking challenge, and the recipes come from the Fairfax-Spencer Family Recipe Book held in George Mason’s Special Collections Research Center.

The event will happen on Wednesday, May 21, from 3–5 p.m. on the Fairfax ��, Fenwick Library. Try your hand at one of the featured recipes, and bring the results to share—or simply come to taste-test and judge. Register to attend.

Commencement and Degree Celebrations

George Mason Commencement and Degree Celebrations are coming soon. Spring Commencement will take place on Thursday, May 15, at 9:30 a.m. in EagleBank Arena. Degree Celebrations on May 14–17 will honor individual graduates as they cross the stage. University Events is seeking faculty and staff volunteers to help with the events. Sign up today. Community College and High School Graduation Ceremonies at EagleBank Arena

Heavy traffic is expected on and around ��’s Fairfax �� for regional community college and high school graduation ceremonies at EagleBank Arena from May 12 through June 16.

Northern Virginia Community College's Commencement will take place at EagleBank Arena on Monday, May 12, at 11 a.m.

High school graduation ceremonies start at EagleBank Arena on Tuesday, May 27, and continue through Monday, June 16. EagleBank Arena will host up to three ceremonies each day, so traffic may be entering and exiting campus from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m. Please allow extra travel time on and around campus. Patriot Packout Happening through May 14

Patriot Packout is an opportunity to donate like-new and gently used items at the Fairfax ��, Science and Technology ��, and the Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation. During residential move-out, Patriot Packout diverts items from the waste stream and makes them available to those who can use them. Learn about accepted donation items, campus drop-off locations, and volunteer opportunities.

Students, faculty, staff, and community members are welcome to donate items. Donations are redistributed to George Mason Patriots, on-campus resources, and local community organizations, preventing useful items from ending up in the trash. Patriot Packout’s donations this spring will support the Patriot Pantry, Trans Clothing Closet, Art Supply Sharing Cabinet, First Gen+ Center, The MIX, Parking and Transportation's bike programs, and Food for Others, and more.

Math Enrichment Camps for Grades 6–9

Mason Math Odyssey is a camp for rising 6–9 graders who are curious about math and would like to learn about mathematics concepts typically not taught in K-12 curriculum. Campers will build mathematical maturity while honing problem solving, collaboration, and communication skills. Camps will be hosted from July 7–11 and July 21–25 on the Fairfax ��. Stearns Center Workshop: High-Impact Practices

Are you interested in developing learning experiences where students can apply their skills and competencies in and beyond the classroom? Participate in a two-part workshop series from the Stearns Center. Fundamentals of Effective Teaching explains the critical elements of teaching today’s students. High-Impact Practices and Applied Learning shows you how to use transparent assignment design for courses with internships, undergraduate research, and project-based learning. This is a two-part series, and the first workshop will be offered on Monday, May 12, from 10 a.m. to noon via Zoom. Learn more and register.

Build an Artificial Reef for the Chesapeake Bay

Roll up your sleeves—it’s reef-building time! Dive into the process of helping create artificial reef structures that will be deployed in the Chesapeake Bay. Participants will help build molds, mix cement, and pour the mix into forms that will shape tomorrow’s marine habitats. This event will be hosted on Monday, May 12, from noon to 2 p.m. on the Science and Technology ��, Bull Run Parking Lot. RSVP on Mason 360.

During the event, hear from Jesse Howe, George Mason alum and assistant director of Coastal Conservation Association Maryland, who will share how artificial reefs support oyster population restoration, biodiversity, and help restore the bay's ecosystem. This is a great opportunity for students seeking volunteer/service hours.

Esports Summer Camp for Teens at George Mason

Gamers and parents of gamers: �� Esports is hosting an Esports Summer Camp in June and July for ages 13–18. If your child is passionate about gaming and is interested in exploring college gaming opportunities, this is a great way to introduce them to structured gaming experiences and skills development workshops, as well as other great things happening on campus. Heal Together is an event that brings together individuals for a day dedicated to healing, self-care, and wellness. Through curated experiences that blend movement, mindfulness, and cultural insights, the event provides an inclusive space where individuals can restore balance and build community.

This event will take place across the Fairfax, Mason Square, and SciTech campuses on Wednesday, April 30. RSVP. Highlights include:

Cinema on the Plaza: Mamma Mia!

Seed Library at Fenwick

The new Seed Library is located on a cart on the first floor of Fenwick Library on the Fairfax ��. The library includes books and online resources that can help you learn to garden. Seed libraries have grown in popularity around the country, found in public libraries, community centers, community gardens, makerspaces, and university libraries. A seed library is stocked with seeds, which patrons take, grow, and then, if possible, return seeds to the library. The emphasis, however, is on the taking and growing of seeds, and less on the drying and returning of seeds. Seed libraries promote growing your own food, well-being, community, and learning in a hands-on way.

A thoughtful and poignant look at the consequences of our actions (or lack thereof), this show asks how you determine the truth when faced with a life-or-death decision.

Virginia Opera and Richmond Symphony present the the highly anticipated world premiere of Loving v. Virginia. A young couple's interracial marriage in 1958 sparks a case that leads to the Supreme Court and a victory for civil rights in the United States. This operatic retelling is based on the true story of Mildred and Richard Loving.

Join the spring finale concert featuring the Mason Symphony Orchestra, with conductors Soo Han and Michael Stern. The Mason Symphony Orchestra will feature three winners of the 2025 Mason Concerto Competition: Bolun Zhang (piano) will perform the third movement of Saint-Saëns' Piano Concerto No. 2 in G Minor; Nathan Plapinger (euphonium) will perform the first movement of Cosma's Euphonium Concerto; and Kai Shi (piano) will perform the first movement of Ravel's Piano Concerto in G Major.

�� Notice: Mason Day Is Friday, April 25

�� will celebrate Mason Day on Friday, April 25, from 3–10 p.m. on the Fairfax ��. The event will feature a carnival with rides, games, treats, food trucks, inflatables, novelties, and performances. Admission is free for students, faculty, and staff with a valid George Mason ID. Guest tickets are available at the EagleBank Arena box office.

The event will take place from 3–10 p.m. in Parking Lots L and A near EagleBank Arena. Plan your trip with shopMason’s guide to Mason Day.

Parking and Traffic Advisory
Expect increased traffic on and around the Fairfax ��. Lot L will be closed from Sunday, April 20, at 11 p.m. through Sunday, April 27. The western side of Lot A will be closed starting on Tuesday, April 22, at 1 p.m., and will reopen Sunday, April 27. Po River Lane between Roanoke River Road and Lot A will be closed on Friday, April 25.

Signage has been posted in affected areas. Any vehicles left in Lot L after 11 p.m. on Sunday, April 20, will be relocated at the owner’s risk and expense. If you have purchased a daily, weekly, or monthly Lot L and K permit, please park in Lot K during this time. Get more details from Parking and Transportation.

Travel Well Vaccine Clinic: Vaccines for International Travelers

The Travel Well Vaccine Clinic provides travelers with a convenient opportunity to get up-to-date on routine vaccines and receive any recommended travel-specific immunizations. The clinic will take place on Tuesday, April 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Fairfax ��, Peterson Hall, Population Health Center. Advance registration is required. Sign up today. Spheres of Engagement is an innovative and collaborative performance project between the Reva and Sid Dewberry Family School of Music and the University Libraries Special Collections Research Center. The Spheres Project, a collaborative music ensemble, will perform new student compositions inspired by the Special Collections Research Center. Spheres of Engagement is coordinated by June Huang, director of the Spheres Project; Cindy Badilla-Meléndez, music and media librarian; and Andrea Reinkemeyer, director of composition. Exhibit: ‘Cross-Pollination’

Held in conjunction with the opening of the Seed Library at Fenwick, Cross-Pollination explores the relationship between the earth’s natural elements and the creative process, featuring works by George Mason faculty. This exhibition draws on both the literal and metaphorical meanings of cross-pollination, emphasizing the continuous exchange between the organic world and artistic creation.

This exhibition grew out of the “IndigenoUs Northern Virginia: Activating Local and Diasporic Native Identities at Mason” project of Alison Landsberg and Gabrielle Tayac. “Indigenous Northern Virginia” began with a Summer Research Institute of students who connected with diverse indigenous communities in Northern Virginia through experiential listening and dialogue. April Is Earth Month

Mason Empty Bowls

Empty Bowls is a grassroots movement by artists in cities around the world to raise money for food-related charities that feed the hungry in their communities. All funds raised through George Mason Empty Bowls will be donated to the Student Food and Housing Insecurity Fund, which serves George Mason students experiencing food insecurity.

Mason Empty Bowls will be hosted on Wednesday, April 30, from 6–9 p.m. at the Center for the Arts on the Fairfax ��. The event includes dinner, dessert, and sounds of Green and Gold Soul. Guests will choose a handmade bowl to take home as a reminder of the students in our community who struggle with food insecurity. For more information and purchase tickets, visit the website.

Annual Tornado Drill: Tuesday, April 8

He retreats into his science books and a world of fantasy as respite, longing to have adventures and be the hero. George Mason School of Theater: ‘12 Angry Jurors’

Trapped together in a sweltering jury room, the tensions rise along with the heat as 12 ordinary people must decide the guilt or innocence of a young person accused of murder. Board of Visitors Public Comment Session Scheduled for April 1

The �� Board of Visitors will conduct a meeting with a corresponding Public Comment session on Tuesday, April 1. This meeting will encompass a presentation by Executive Vice President for Finance and Administration Deb Dickenson on Mason’s FY 2026 Tuition and Mandatory Fees. Details specific to the meeting and the public comment process are available on the Board of Visitors website.

President's Town Hall Sessions with Faculty/Staff

�� President Gregory Washington will host two 90-minute town hall sessions to discuss the state of the university and to engage with faculty and staff.

The town hall for employees working in nonacademic units will take place on Tuesday, March 25, at 1:30 p.m., on the Fairfax ��, The Hub, Ballroom.

For those unable to attend in-person, the session will be livestreamed on Zoom. Contact your respective unit leadership for Zoom link and password. While questions will be taken at the conclusion of the town hall, the Zoom chat function will not be enabled. Should virtual attendees have any questions, please provide them to your designated unit contact so they can be shared in-person during the town hall session. Learn more.

MMR Vaccine Clinic: Thursday, March 27

The Employee Health and Well-Being division of Risk, Safety, and Resilience is hosting a Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) vaccine clinic on Thursday, March 27, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Fairfax �� in the Population Health Center in Peterson Hall. This clinic is open to George Mason faculty, staff, and their families insured under Aetna and Anthem BCBS. Others should verify coverage with their provider. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Register for an appointment.

Your Resilience Recipe: Finding Support in Mason Resources

This event will feature guest speaker Cristina Mogro-Wilson, a Latina scholar and expert in health disparities working with Latino families. Her research has made substantial contributions to improving the lives of families by identifying modifiable factors associated with parenting and how culture influences parenting in Latino families.

Mogro-Wilson is the editor-in-chief of Families in Society: The Journal of Contemporary Social Services, a core journal in social work research. She is co-PI on four federally funded five-year grants totaling more than $20 million from the U.S. Department of Education and the Health Resources and Services Administration.
