º£½ÇÉçÇø continues to take enhanced precautions to maintain a safe and secure university community in light of the recent FBI arrest of one of its students.

As we approach the close of the fall semester, I want to put to rest concerns we have heard voiced on campus in recent weeks, as recent headlines and social media have left some worried about the safety of the º£½ÇÉçÇø campus. In particular, a recent off-campus police action has left many alarmed.

A growing number of American universities have erupted into jarring scenes of protests and police responses that we have not seen at universities in more than a half-century. Across Virginia, this reality has played out even on campuses that have scarcely ever experienced public demonstrations.

In my last message about the unfolding conflict in Israel and Gaza, we shared that security efforts are in place to address safety concerns, and services are in place to assist people in crisis. Since that time, we have organized pre-existing campus services into a coordinated approach, which we are calling the Patriot Plan for Community Safety and Well-Being.

What is the commitment of º£½ÇÉçÇø, both to this university, and to the community and Commonwealth we serve? We commit our fidelity to our principles.

Today’s United States Supreme Court decision barring the consideration of race for college admissions will not disrupt admissions operations at º£½ÇÉçÇø, because Mason does not factor race into its admissions decisions.

Over the past two years, the Mason community has undergone significant introspection through various strategic planning and branding exercises, and challenged ourselves to answer fundamental questions of who we are, who we wish to be, and why anyone should care. In other words, what does it mean to be a Patriot?

An update on the process Mason will follow to distribute this year’s increase in base compensation for all state employees.

In the coming days, the United States Supreme Court is expected to hand down several landmark decisions of a magnitude that may provoke vocal, public reactions from people on all sides of the issues being adjudicated. We also know the impact of those decisions may weigh differently, and have different consequences, for different community members.

Now, the summer season is upon us, and as many of us look forward to time away with friends and family, we must remember that COVID isn’t taking a summer break.
